Today I woke up, ran my miles (only 2.07 on days that I intend to write, so I don't get too tired), showered & shaved, then sat down to write.
I am already 30 pages into my first comedy script.
Writing comedy is harder than I thought.
I won't lie: this script isn't feeling as funny as I want it to be, or as funny as it was in my head when I envisioned it.
It's actually really difficult to layer in the jokes in addition to keeping the plot moving forward and solidifying the characters and conflict and to check all the narrative boxes you have to check.,
But I have my 3-act outline all done (had it done back in 2016) and I have a rough outline (more of just a series of bulletpoints) of the jokes I want to make (funny bits of dialog, humorous scenarios, etc.).
I realize that I can always go back and do re-writes and new drafts where I layer in more jokes and funny bits, but I honestly thought I'd have a ball writing this and I feel kinda perfunctory and businesslike writing this thing (when it was supposed to be my opus, my comedic masterpiece, my gift of wacky, feel-good comedy to the world... and other pretentious ambitions).
There are times where I thought, "Forget it! Write it next summer! Or over winter break. Just write it when you're feeling it!"
But I've had this idea in my head now for 6 years and I can't put off writing it any more.
Ah well.
I've hit my writing stride, I am guessing I still start feeling the comedic vibes at some point in the writing.
I do know that I'm a bit behind on hitting all the narrative benchmarks I'm supposed to hit. For instance: I'm going to be past the 30-page mark before I get to my first plot point.
But so it goes.
At any rate, I am going to finish up the scene I am writing and call it a night.
But all in all, I have been writing for several hours straight and it feels amazing!
