While getting my hair cut today (by a stylist I've been using for at least 5 years), she told me (when I voiced my frustration at my lack of luck in finding representation and, thus, publication) about self-publishing on Kindle. She told me the last 5 books she'd read had been self-published on Kindle.
Now, when I submitted queries for my novel The Murderers (my first full-on piece of fiction, with no autobiographical elements, since writing Humansville in college in 2001) one agent told me that the novel was too short (clocking in at less than 200 pages) and that ePublishing might be a better route.
However, my search for ePublishers didn't yield too fruitful of results.
Which is fine. I just walked through the process of publishing my 2010 novella The Murderers on Kindle and (in 12 hours) it should be available to buy on Kindle for around $10 (with me getting 35% royalties).
We shall see how this all pans out.
Perhaps if The Murderers sells well, agents and publishers will come looking for me.
If nothing else, I can then brag about the novella's sales without the benefit of an agent or publisher in my next query letter.
Otherwise, I feel relatively accomplished for today.
Though I may still submit some queries before heading off to sleep...
