So... with Hollywood making grossly substandard sequels (like Critters Attack! and Critters: A New Binge and the proposed RoboCop Returns and Ghostbusters 2020... which, obviously, I haven't seen either of those last two yet (they're not even finished making them) but they sound horrible) and remakes (2010's Nightmare on Elm Street, 2016's Fauxbust... er, I mean, Ghostbusters, this year's Child's Play) to all my beloved childhood classics, I almost feel compelled to sit down and write out what I think would be killer sequels to all my favorite films.
I wouldn't pen any remakes, as I'm virtually opposed to nearly all remakes... though I do own quite a bit of them and I see most (if not all of them, even ones I am morally, artistically, emotionally and even spiritually offended by their very existence, like 2014's RoboCop remake) in theaters. In some cases remakes are appreciated and even valid or necessary (like 1990's Night of the Living Dead, 1988's The Blob, John Carpenter's The Thing or even 1999's House on Haunted Hill). But most of the time (and especially recently) they are cash grabs.
At any rate, on one hand this feels like pathetic fan fiction.
On the other hand, it will get me writing again.
But then, on the other hand, it is potentially sapping time away from writing I could be doing on my own original creative work (and I am fully aware that I will die before having fully realized, fleshed out or having had produced or published all of my ideas that I have outlined).
But then, if by some miracle I do make it to Hollywood, I will have all of these scripts in the bank and ready to go... If studios come to me and say,
"We loved Personal Demons... Do you have any interest in rewriting the new Em Street sequel for Andy Muschietti to direct?"
I can say,
"Sure... Let me get to work on that!"
When in reality I've already got it in my back pocket.
Just a thought... might be something amusing to do in my spare time... like I have any of that.
