new David Kemp story

Just wrote my first short story in I don't want to say how long...

It's an autobiographical piece featuring my literary avatar David Kemp.

And, as it was with my last novel, I agonized over every word in an effort to capture perfection.

Not sure if that actually works or not.

Some say you have to let perfection happen organically and just let the words flow.

I think it's different for every person.

Hemingway drank while he wrote (and sometimes so do I... red wine, mostly).

And Kerouac wrote On the Road on speed, with a scroll shifting through his typewriter.

I like my method, for now.

Not every word has to be perfect or precise. It'd be nice if they were. And, true, I feel humbled by guys like Lovecraft, Poe, Dickens, Richard Yates, Barker, Tim O'Brien and Fante, who seem to get it right (presumably) the first time with poetic perfection, but whatever. I do what I can. In time I will get better. Like Bukowski said, "get old". As you age, you get better at writing; certified fact.

Now on to a screenplay I began in 2011... I really hate thinking that I've let projects sit for this long, but such is life.

Thankfully, I possess the drive and (hopefully) the skill to pick up where I left off and complete it without an disruption of the creative process.

We shall see.

Here it goes...
